A day before the start of the NATO summit in Lithuania, the country has become the target of multiple cyber attacks, according to the government. Websites of the capital Vilnius, among others, were affected.
According to the head of the National Center for Cyber Security, Liudas Alisauskas, the websites were so overloaded with so-called DDoS (“Distributed Denial of Service”) attacks that they were no longer accessible.
Among other things, the website for tourist information and an app for local public transport were affected. “These are basic services that should be available to our guests,” explains Alisauskas.
Misinformation against NATO and Ukraine
As the Baltic state’s cyber defense explained, it also received a report on two other incidents on Sunday. In one of them, a regional radio station was hacked. The current broadcast was interrupted by false information targeting NATO and Ukraine.
In addition, telecom group Telia announced on Monday that it had detected calls on Telegram channels about attacks on various state institutions and companies in Lithuania. The two-day NATO summit begins tomorrow, Tuesday, and will focus on the war in Ukraine.
There is also an information war raging
In the Russian offensive war against Ukraine, not only conventional weapons are used, but also information. By deliberately distorting facts, the Kremlin aims to spread a very positive image of Russia around the world.
