In the night from Sunday to Monday, at least four cars with Ukrainian license plates were defaced with Russian propaganda symbols. The acts of vandalism are said to have taken place in Vienna-Donaustadt, near Seestadt. A car chat group reported the incident to the police.
Wassyl Chymynez, the Ukrainian ambassador to Austria, spoke of “images that are very shocking” and a “cruel crime” against the Ukrainians. “Russian barbarism and its accomplices are also showing their criminal face in Austria,” Chymynez wrote on Twitter. The perpetrators must be held accountable, the diplomat turned to the headquarters of the Vienna State Police.
Vandals profess their allegiance to Russia with a symbol
The “Z” symbol is considered a sign of support for Russia, including the invasion of Ukraine. The “Z” is often seen on Russian military equipment and clothing. The letter stands for the slogan “To victory”. Unlike in Germany, the “Z” symbol is not banned in Austria. According to the German Interior Ministry, displaying the symbol as public endorsement of Russia’s war against Ukraine could be punishable under Article 140 of the Criminal Code.
Corresponding reports have already been received. It is determined based on the facts of the property damage.
