He has called for “a thorough and independent investigation to clarify all the circumstances surrounding these incidents as soon as possible and to bring those responsible to justice”.
The European Union on Wednesday condemned the murder of Al Jazeera journalist Shirín abu Aklé during an Israeli operation in the Palestinian city of Jenin, in the north of the West Bank, and has called for an independent investigation of the case.
In a statement, the office of the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, “strongly condemned” the death in a shooting of Palestinian-American journalist and the injuries of her partner Ali al Samud.
“It is essential that a full and independent investigation clarify all the circumstances of these incidents as soon as possible and that those responsible are brought to justice. It is unacceptable to attack journalists while doing their job,” he said in the statement, stressing the need to ensure the protection and safety of journalists in conflicts.
Community diplomacy has always supported the “fundamental” work of journalists, especially in conflict situations, and has ensured the “critical” role of the independent press.
Abu Aklé, 51, was in a refugee camp in Jenin, where he reported on clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces who shot at youths and press teams who were in the area, Ma’an news agency said.
Several videos show the journalist wearing a bulletproof vest and wearing a helmet with the word “press” on it. Journalist Ali Samudi, who was shot in the back, even told ‘Haaretz’ newspaper that both he and another journalist, as well as the reporter who died as a result of the shooting, were wearing their identification vests.
The Israeli military’s version is that security forces have entered a refugee camp in Jenin and also the nearby city of Burqin to arrest “terrorism suspects,” as reported by the Times of Israel newspaper and it has pointed out that the journalists were injured “possibly by gunfire from armed Palestinians”.
