Germany is supplying Ukraine with additional weapons, ammunition and military equipment worth almost 700 million euros. This was announced on Tuesday at the start of the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Ukraine attacked by Russia will receive, among others, another 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, 25 Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks and five armored recovery vehicles, as well as two launchers for Patriot anti-aircraft missiles from the Bundeswehr. There are also 20,000 artillery ammunition and 5,000 smoke ammunition, as well as reconnaissance drones and anti-drone defenses.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected to officially announce the package at the start of the NATO summit. The German federal government has already officially authorized arms deliveries to Ukraine worth more than three billion euros. There are also deliveries that do not need to be approved.
Billion dollar package in May
The German government recently promised Ukraine a major arms package worth €2.7 billion on the occasion of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Germany in May.
In addition to Zelensky, Scholz, US President Joe Biden and the other heads of state and government of the 31 NATO countries are expected at the meeting in Vilnius. The Ukrainian head of state will discuss even closer cooperation with the defense alliance.
