In a kitchen fire in East Tyrol, an 84-year-old and her granddaughter had bad luck. The pensioner had been paying attention to hot oil in a pan. Then everything went really fast…
The local (84) prepared food around 9.15 am on Thursday in her kitchen on the first floor of an apartment building in Schlaiten and had a pan of oil on the stove. Then she went to the basement to get something from the freezer. When she came back into the kitchen, the oil started to burn and there was a lot of smoke.
Attempts to extinguish with a blanket
With his presence of mind, the 84-year-old took a blanket, threw it over the pan and was able to smother most of the fire. The 23-year-old granddaughter, who was sleeping on the second floor, was awakened by the smell of smoke and immediately called the fire department. The 23-year-old then went to her grandmother with a wet cloth for her, found her still standing in the kitchen and took her outside.
With the rescue to the hospital
A short time later, the Schlaiten and Ainet volunteer fire brigades arrived and carried out the final extinguishing and post-extinguishing work. The two women were taken by ambulance to the hospital in Lienz and treated there as an outpatient. According to initial findings, both had inhaled light smoke. Significant damage was done in the kitchen.
