In Russia, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Telecommunications, Maxim Parshin, has been arrested on suspicion of corruption. “The investigators’ request for pre-trial detention as procedural protection against Parshin had reached the court on September 12,” the Interfax news agency quoted a spokesman for a Moscow district court as saying.
Parshin is accused of taking bribes on a particularly large scale. According to a newspaper report, he was arrested just as the bribe was accepted.
Five years in government
The 46-year-old has been a deputy minister in the Russian government since 2018. His responsibilities include the development of information technologies, creating favorable conditions for IT companies and training programmers.
Corruption is still widespread in Russia, also because the authorities are selective in tackling it. However, senior officials have also been arrested for bribery. The most prominent case is former economy minister Alexey Ulyukayev, who was sentenced to eight years in prison for corruption in 2017.
