Palestine has demanded from the United Nations (UN) an “international and independent inquiry” into the Murder of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh at the hands of the Israeli army
Abu Akleh, 51, reported on an Israeli operation in Jenin, West Bank. Journalist Ali Samudi, who stood next to the deceased and was shot in the back during the raid, also blames Israeli forces and pointed out that the shooting took place in an area where there were no armed clashes with Palestinian gunmen.
Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansur is confident the UN Security Council can decide unanimously on the case, which has been condemned by numerous countries, including the United States, Israel’s main supporter of the United Nations.
Mansur has maintained that “the Israeli occupation authorities” were the ones who “killed” the journalist. In addition, he made it clear thatThe Palestinian authorities will not cooperate with the investigations announced by Israel or accept an investigation conducted solely by the “occupying power” “Criminals cannot investigate themselves,” he emphasized.
The general secretary of the UN, António Guterres, without accusing Israel or pointing to the authorship of the shot, has “asked the competent authorities to conduct a transparent investigation” into the events and “ensure that those responsible are held accountable” . However, Guterres has not announced any concrete UN action in this regard.
