Severe weather in Carinthia – 20 fire brigades in action for clean-up work

Date:

After the heavy storm that raged over Carinthia on Monday evening and hit the Völkermarkt district in particular hard, the clean-up work is in full swing on Tuesday. Fire departments from other districts were called in to provide support.

Since Tuesday morning, intensive work has been underway in the Völkermarkt district to repair the damage caused by the storm of the previous evening. The areas of St. Marxen, St. Kanzian, Peratschitzen and Eberndorf were particularly hard hit. With many roads still blocked, a helicopter reconnaissance flight was conducted to better assess the true size of the storm.

Fire brigades from other districts are also present
“We have asked for support from comrades from other districts. There are currently 20 fire brigades in service. We are working at full speed to restore the infrastructure as quickly as possible,” says district fire chief Patrick Skubel.

Several houses were attacked, especially in the area around the Klopeiner See. “We received 3,000 square meters of a special tarpaulin that we temporarily placed on the roofs. But we will definitely need more tarpaulins and have to resort to warehouses and the like,” explains Skubel.

Massive damage to the power grid
At present, a total of 900 households throughout Carinthia are still without power. “The Görtschitztal, Hüttenberg, Innerteuchen and Bleiberg-Kreuth are also affected, but the focus is clearly on the Völkermarkt area. There was enormous damage there, which is why there are still outages,” says Robert Schmaranz from Kärnten Netz and adds : “Our goal is to restore power to as many customers as possible during the day. But the proper repair work will continue for us for a long time. We are still working today on last week’s outages.”
