Storm in Austria – wind is raging across Tyrol at speeds of up to 161 km/h

On Tuesday, several storms raged in Austria. Tyrol, Carinthia and Styria were particularly affected. In the district of Imst (Tyrol) wind peaks of up to 161 kilometers per hour were even measured. The fire brigade had to turn out hundreds of times.

A storm front with showers, hail and rain moved across the country on Tuesday. In Tyrol, Carinthia and Styria there was damage, local power cuts and road and rail closures. According to Energie Steiermark, about 2,000 households in the state were without power on Tuesday evening. Some sections of Ennstalbundesstraße (B320) had to be closed for cleanup work. Numerous trees had fallen on the road.

“Only between Schladming and Haus im Ennstal, about two dozen mature trees fell on the road in the three-lane section,” it said in a broadcast. According to initial information from the fire service, a motorist in Oberhaus was injured when a tree fell on his moving car.

In Tyrol, some roofs were even removed. The storm reached peaks of up to 161 kilometers per hour. In total, the fire brigade had to be called more than 500 times. For example, she removed fallen trees and pumped out cellars. As reported, rail traffic was also affected. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen was stuck on his way to the Bregenzer Festspiele. The duration of the closures was unpredictable for the time being, a rail replacement service with buses was set up.

The president, on the other hand, was able to continue the journey in a car after he and other passengers had been in the cars for about two hours. The ÖAMTC advised against non-essential travel in Tyrol. There, too, the population suffered from power outages. At peak times, 18,000 households and 400 transformer substations in 31 municipalities in Tyrol were briefly without power. In Silz, the mayor even asked the population not to leave the building for the time being – because of flying parts through covered roofs.

Ten injured in Carinthia
This warning has since been lifted. 500 missions were also completed in Carinthia on Tuesday. Heavy rain led to flooding and ten people were injured at a campsite on Lake Gösselsdorf. You have been hit by flying objects. The storm caused a total of millions of damages in Carinthia. 2.3 million of these affect agriculture, as arable crops, grassland and parts of garden centers and tree nurseries were severely damaged (see Carinthia video above).

The “Orange” storm warning level for Tyrol will remain in effect until Wednesday morning and more storms are also expected in Styria in the coming days. Severe thunderstorms are still possible in Vorarlberg until 6 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Wind gusts are possible with speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, according to the state news agency.
