Warning for Europeans – WHO: ‘Without preparation, heat can kill’

Date:

In view of the heat wave in large parts of the continent, the European office of the World Health Organization (WHO) warns not to be caught unprepared by the high temperatures. Because without proper preparation, heat can kill, it said.

The director of the WHO Europe region, Hans Kluge, called on the one hand to immediately protect himself and his fellow man, but on the other hand to take the right precautions for the future. “In addition to adjusting to our new reality this summer, we need to look to the years and decades to come,” the regional director stressed.

There is an urgent need for regional and global action to effectively address the climate crisis, which poses an existential threat to humanity. It is also crucial to involve young people, who are particularly concerned with climate issues and are often overflowing with ideas and solutions. In addition, all sides of the political spectrum must view the fight against climate change as a two-pronged issue.

Tips for the heat wave
Kluge recommended a series of measures directly related to this summer. One should therefore stay away from the heat by not going out and doing strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. It is also advisable to keep the apartment cool, for example by lowering the blinds during the day and using the night air to cool the living room. It is also important to keep the body cool and hydrated – this can be achieved by wearing light, loose clothing, taking cold showers and drinking water regularly.
