Excitement over video – mobile phone behind the wheel: bus driver can keep his job

Date:

After the video of a bus driver using his mobile phone behind the wheel caused a stir in Salzburg – reported the “Krone” – Salzburg AG and the driver himself are now speaking out. The man gets off with a warning and can keep his job.

According to information from Salzburg AG, not only the bus driver and the angry passenger, who captured the misconduct on film, were involved in the incident on Saturday. Another passenger and the suspect’s wife also played a role. The couple – the woman is also a trolleybus driver – was questioned separately by the transport company about the incidents on Monday.

Wanted to get an overview of the roster
The suspected trolleybus driver was remorseful and stated that he used his mobile phone for one to two minutes while driving to work. He was available to drive that day and had to replace a colleague at short notice. He could only get an overview of his duty roster while driving.

The steering wheel had a reason, but it is far from justified. As we all know, it is illegal to use a cell phone while driving. At the last stop, he was eventually confronted by two passengers – including Alex K. – about his misconduct and the video. Because the two occupants had made a video of the man without his permission and wanted to forward it, a discussion ensued – but without the desired result for the employee…

The wife of the bus driver also came along during the argument. According to Salzburg AG, she admitted that during the conversation she may have shown the middle finger to one of the passengers with a quick gesture. Alex K. and another passenger then exited the trolleybus.

Company comment on incident
“We regret this incident and would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the two passengers. Even though the trolleybus driver used his mobile phone for his work, he was breaking the rules. He was immediately summoned for an interview and warned” Salzburg AG said in a statement to ‘Krone’ on Tuesday. The trolleybus driver was also reprimanded for her misconduct in a conversation.

To date, there have been no complaints or customer complaints from the trolleybus driver or his wife. “We believe this was and will be a one-off misconduct,” the company said. Salzburg AG also emphasizes: “Nevertheless, we are taking this incident as an opportunity to remind all trolleybus drivers once again that mobile phones are prohibited behind the wheel.”

Another case has been reported
It seems that the action of the bus driver in Salzburg is not an isolated case. A reporter from “Krone” from Styria had reported a similar incident. Also in this case – see photo above – a driver was behind the wheel with a mobile phone. According to the passenger, the man would have had a video call with his son while driving. He operated the vehicle with his right arm.
