LAB asks the new Basque government to agree on a minimum wage of 1,600 euros outside the Social Dialogue Table

Date:

Garbiñe Aranburu has outlined the demands they will make to the new executive, including adopting measures to improve salaries; strengthening public services and promoting industrial reconversion that faces eco-social challenges and is not led by companies.

The LAB union has demanded that the new Basque government set up a specific negotiating table, outside the Social Dialogue Table, to agree on a minimum wage, which, according to calculations updated by the central office, should be at the same level. 1600 euros.

The general coordinator of LAB, Garbine Aranburuexplained this Monday in Bilbao the demands that the union will formulate in the contact rounds announced by the new Lehendakari, Imanol Pradalesand the employment advisor, Michael Torres.

Although not yet officially called, LAB has already drawn up the list of demands to be made, which includes the adoption of measures to improve salaries, updating them above the CPI; strengthening public services and promoting industrial reconversion that faces eco-social challenges and is not led by companies.

“Image of change, but continuity”

LAB has the program of the PNV and PSE-EE for the formation of the Basque government and the conclusion, according to Aranburu, is that “it does not correspond to the image of change” that the new executive wants to give, since “continuity” is valued. For the unionist, “praising” the management of the last Basque government is “not a good starting point”.

Before the new executive, LAB will advocate for employers to “pay more” and will ask the government to “set an example” by improving the salaries of public workers and the conditions of subcontractors.

It will also benefit from a minimum interprofessional salary (SMI) in line with the socio-economic reality of the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV).

LAB has demanded a minimum salary of 1,400 euros in response to the European Social Charter’s recommendation that this would be equivalent to 60% of the territorial average salarybut has increased the claim to 1,600 euros, as according to his calculations this is the updated amount resulting from the most recent statistical data on the salary structure (corresponding to 2022).

Outside the Social Dialogue Table

Aranburu has considered that the government agreement between PNV and PSE-EE “includes the need for a minimum wage in line with the reality of the territory”, which he has considered “the result of the workers’ struggle”, but has denounced that this The issue can be discussed in the Social Dialogue Table shared by the Basque Government, the employers’ organisation Confebask and the trade unions CCOO and UGT, and in which ELA and LAB do not participate on their own initiative.

In the round of contacts with the new Basque government, the Abertzale union will, among other things, also be a change naturally of the ‘neoliberal and clientelist’ policies in Osakidetza and will argue for a new political legal framework that guarantees greater levels of sovereignty.
