After Baerbock statement – Russian UN ambassador: “proxy war”

Date:

Russia’s UN Ambassador Wassili Nebensja adopted a statement by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock as a commitment for German participation in the war in Ukraine. Speaking before the UN Security Council in New York on Wednesday, the diplomat referred to a Baerbock verdict before the Council of Europe in January. At the time, she had called for cohesion among Western allies, saying: “We are waging a war against Russia, not against each other.”

Nebensya now said, “It’s not even about the admissions of politicians like German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who says NATO is waging a proxy war against Russia.” Ukraine cannot defeat Russia alone on the battlefield.

Ministry: “We are not a party to the war”
The State Department later clarified that Baerbock did not mean Germany or its allies to enter the war. The German government stressed: “We support Ukraine, but we are not a party to the war.”

UN warns of escalation
The United Nations warns of a further escalation of the war in view of the supply of heavy weapons such as tanks to Ukraine. “The large influx of arms in every situation of armed conflict increases concern about the escalation of the conflict,” UN envoy for disarmament affairs Izumi Nakamitsu told the UN Security Council in New York on Wednesday. Earlier she mentioned the commitments to send main battle tanks to Ukraine.

Nakamitsu also spoke about drone deliveries from Iran to Russia and – indirectly – about the deployment of the private Russian military company Wagner in Ukraine. In addition, heavy weapons of war must be prevented from falling into the wrong hands and threatening the stability of the entire region, even after the end of the conflict.

British tanks in Ukraine as early as March
The British Challenger 2 main battle tanks will be deployed to Ukraine as early as next month. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced this on Wednesday during a joint visit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to an army training ground in Dorset province. “The Ukrainian crews that arrived last week will use the Challenger 2 tanks to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty in the coming month,” Sunak said.

The Russian embassy in the UK had previously warned the government in London not to supply fighter jets to Ukraine. A statement quoted by Russian state news agencies said the British government was responsible for “bloodshed, the next round of escalation and the ensuing military and political consequences for the European continent and the rest of the world”. These would be caused by sending modern fighter jets to Ukraine. Moscow will find a way to respond to unfriendly actions from the British side, it said.
