Tuesday afternoon there was thunder, lightning and storm again in Austria. This is also the case in Vorarlberg. In the Montafon, the violent storm covered other roofs and uprooted trees. Miraculously, no one was injured.
In total, the fire brigade had to be deployed about 25 times on Tuesday between 2.10 pm and 2.45 pm in the Montafon alone. The storm caused a lot of damage, especially in the municipality of St. Gallenkirch and especially in the districts of Gortipohl and Garfrescha.
Roofs of residential buildings were swept away
Within minutes, the violent storm covered the dormer window of a residential building in St. Gallenkirch. In Gortipohl, the wind swept parts of several roofs of residential buildings. At the Alpengasthof Garfrescha, the strong gusts of wind blew away about 100 square meters of the tin roof and threw part of it onto the terrace. Luckily no one was there at the time.
trees uprooted
Several trees were uprooted and moved to Montafonerstraße (L188), leading to a total closure for the duration of the remediation work. Fallen trees also blocked the “Grappes” freight road in St. Gallenkirch and the cycle path along the Ill in Gaschurn.
In the garden of a residential house, the storm knocked over a 120-year-old umbrella pine. The conifer missed the residential building by a hair’s breadth. During and after the storm, a total of about a hundred firefighters were deployed in the Montafon and Walgau.
