Severe storms have killed at least five people in Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. After days of heat, violent thunderstorms with heavy rain and gusts of wind hit the Balkans on Wednesday evening. According to the police, at least four people in Croatia have been killed by falling trees, including two in the capital Zagreb.
Troops on Thursday cleared streets in Zagreb blocked by fallen trees and power poles.
The authorities warned residents and holidaymakers against entering parks and forests. Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomasevic stated that this storm was unprecedented in terms of its strength and the damage it caused.
Construction crane overturned, telephone lines overloaded
A construction crane also overturned, injuring the crane operator. According to local media, the telephone lines became temporarily overloaded and more than 700 emergency calls came in within a very short time.
Hailstones the size of golf balls also fell from the sky. There was chaotic conditions in the Croatian capital.
