Forest fire rages on – tall trees complicate extinguishing efforts on Rhodes

Date:

In Greece, the fire brigade has largely contained the two large forest fires near Athens. However, the forest fire continues to rage on Rhodes. The extinguishing work in the middle of the island is hampered by trees up to 15 meters high, state broadcaster ERT reports.

Nevertheless, the situation is slightly better than the day before, according to the newspaper. There are also smaller fire sources in the Dervenochoria region and near the town of Loutraki, but these can probably be extinguished during the day. The fire brigade estimated the risk of forest fires to be lower on Thursday than the previous days, because the strong wind died down. The all-clear could not be given because of the drought.

The Greek weather service predicted the start of a second heat wave for Thursday with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. On Friday it can even get 44 degrees hot. Only recently did authorities close ancient sites, such as the Athenian Acropolis, for several hours a day due to the intense heat to protect visitors.

Many threatened by heat
“There are many who are at risk in such a heat,” doctors said in Athens on Thursday. Examples are small children, the elderly and the sick, pregnant and breastfeeding women. Drug addicts, alcoholics and overweight people should not expose themselves to the sun unnecessarily, it said. “We recommend not leaving the house at night unless absolutely necessary.”

When you leave the house, you must have water with you. The population should dress lightly, eat only light meals and take lukewarm showers rather than cold. The doctors also advised keeping the windows of apartments and houses closed. According to meteorologists, the heat wave can last up to ten days.
