The company Alba Biotech hopes to market this innovative product, which it has developed together with the UPV/EHU, by the end of this year.
The Álava Laboratory Alba Biotech has presented in Vitoria-Gasteiz the first test strips currently detecting drugs of submission with drinks. The company hopes to bring this new product, which was developed together with the University of the Basque Country, to the market by the end of this year.
Ane Fernández de Arbina, CEO of the laboratory, has explained that the commercial name of the comics will be Test4Safe and that it is made with a world first technology, already patented in Spain and in the European patent process.
The operation of the product is simple. It’s a test strip, the size of a Band-Aid, that is dipped in the drink and changes color in seconds, turning pink when there are no drugs and intense blue when it detects them. It is a patch designed to be carried in your wallet, purse or cell phone case.
The strip reacts to two of the four most commonly used drugs in chemical subjugation, ketamine and diazepam. Likewise, the lab is finalizing the technology to make the burundanga. However, for now, the fourth most commonly used drug in this entry, liquid ecstasy, is not detected.
Fernández de Arbina has emphasized that the reliability is very high. He assures that they did tests with different amounts of booze and amounts of drugs and the results were always correct.
The lab has wanted to emphasize that they are committed to prevention, not to sound the alarm. The idea of the product is not that the user constantly puts the strips in the drink, but that they are used in cases of doubt. The CEO reminds that the problem with these drugs is that they are odorless, colorless and tasteless, so the victim does not notice that they have been added to the drink.
Initially, users will be able to find these comics in pharmacies. However, makers are thinking about other distribution channels such as hotels, town halls or companies that organize events.
