Farmer charged – beating cows was not cruelty to animals in court

Date:

Because he allegedly tortured his cows and fed moldy silage, a Tyrolean farmer (60) had to answer in court on Wednesday. The rustic man ranted in court, but was acquitted.

Rough customs apparently prevail in the Tyrolean Gschnitztal. There a farmer (60) kept kicking his cows with his feet or hitting them with a rope. “If that’s bad treatment, you can let go of farming altogether,” the rustic defendant shouted angrily through the courtroom just before the end of the trial.

‘Moving with sticks is legitimate’
“They have been able to get a good picture of your aggression potential,” the judge finally said. However, he didn’t believe the farmer had harassed his animals: “You can’t pet animals after they have had calves, and beating them up with sticks or the like is also legitimate.”

Moldy silage fed?
In addition, a report from the official veterinarian supported the defendant’s innocence: “There was no neglect of the animals,” the judge stressed, giving no real credence to a witness who voluntarily lived in the defendant’s stable for a year had helped. The woman had charged that the animals had been fed “only moldy silage”. The farmer was acquitted.
