Wildfires have been raging in Canada for days. Emergency services are working tirelessly to fight the flames. A helicopter pilot died in the west of the country on Wednesday evening. The pilot is already the third fatality during the extinguishing work. There are currently 880 active fires, of which 546 are out of control.
The 41-year-old’s machine was discovered in northern Alberta near Haig Lake. He was alone on the plane. Forest workers tried to resuscitate the pilot. He was taken to an airport where he was pronounced dead.
PM ‘heartbroken’
Canada’s Prime Minister, Justice Trudeau, said on Twitter (see below) that he was “heartbroken” that another Canadian had been killed fighting the wildfires.
880 active fires, 546 out of control
In total, more than eleven million hectares have already burned in Canada this year. So ten times the national average. As of Thursday, there were more than 880 active fires, 546 of which were out of control.
Usually, boreal forests, which are sparsely populated, burn, causing little material damage and casualties. The fires have devastating consequences for the environment. Due to its geographic location, Canada is warming faster than the rest of the planet. The country has experienced extreme weather events in recent years, the magnitude and frequency of which are increasing due to climate change.
