The Vice President of the Vienna Medical Association, Stefan Konrad, says it all clearly in the krone.tv interview with Conny Winiwarter: “No one has to worry right now that they won’t get help in the hospital.” Why is there still no solution? “Because there are too many people involved who have a say.” Konrad is also on the ‘black list’ of Alderman for Health Peter Hacker (SPÖ)…
“We are in a crisis, but I don’t think the health system will collapse,” says the vice president of the Vienna Medical Association optimistically. Nevertheless, political commitment is needed – and an abundant rain of money. Because the 10-point plan presented by the Medical Association wants to increase salaries by 30 percent, a residence allowance of 24,000 euros per person in care and a reduction in working hours. According to the vice president, the 32-hour work week for doctors is “not a fairy tale.”
“Money was also abolished in the Corona crisis”
Konrad is convinced that the necessary money is there. According to him, the central question is: how important is health care for the population for politics? The Viennese City Councilor for Public Health Peter Hacker (SPÖ) is not convinced. According to him, the cost-intensive proposals of the medical association “do not fall under the health budget.” Speaking of hackers, he speaks of a bad relationship between him and some officials of the medical association. “I’m part of that too,” said the vice president.
Reason for conversation with hacker ‘very tense’
But it’s not like “someone in the Kammerl is coming up with a campaign”. The medical association only wants to articulate and point out the problems, Konrad tries diplomatically. According to him, the solutions would be on the table, the talks would “get stuck”. However, the vice president makes it clear: “The medical association is not leading a crusade against Mr. Hacker.”
“Social security and politics in the train”
But the much more important question is: who is responsible for the misery in the health sector? “Healthcare is destined for an eternal ping-pong game of responsibility. In fact, we still work as we did in Kaiser’s time.” According to Konrad, there are too many players who have a say. However, he sees a primary need for social security and politics to improve the framework conditions.
The video above shows why there is nothing wrong with the expansion of the primary care centers and whether the ambulance reimbursement will be back soon.
