For the police officers in the Innviertel (Upper Austria) it is still a daily routine: they collect towed refugees from small and large trucks. On Friday, a tugboat was in court in Ried, which allegedly left its “customers” unattended for days.
For days, nine migrants are said to have been crammed into a truck with a trailer and come to Austria from Turkey via Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. The prosecutor accused the 51-year-old Turk, who had driven the truck, of not providing enough water and food to his illegal passengers, who also had to use bottles to defecate. Since getting out was not a problem, the cargo was sealed.
The smuggler is said to have received 200 to 400 euros from each “customer”, and he was actually supposed to bring his human cargo to Germany. But in Suben, just before the border, the last stop was on May 17 this year. Police officers found the illegal refugees, released them and arrested the trafficker. He was taken to court from custody.
The judge saw the Turk’s guilt as proven, so he knew about his “charge” and sentenced him to two years in prison, eight months of which were unconditional. The verdict is not yet final.
