There is no end to the heat wave in Greece. As the meteorological office announced on Saturday, values of up to 45 degrees Celsius are expected in the south of the country at the weekend. The fire service again warned of the great danger of forest fires.
“We are facing even more difficult times,” a spokesman for the fire department said on state television Saturday morning. The risk of wildfires remains extremely high, it said.
Meanwhile, hundreds of firefighters from Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Slovakia and Malta have arrived in Greece to strengthen the fire brigade and fight the flames. France, Italy, Turkey, Cyprus, Israel and Jordan are participating in the firefighting efforts with firefighting planes and helicopters, the Greek Civil Protection announced.
Drought causes fires to flare up again and again
The fires in the Athens area and on the Peloponnese peninsula are largely under control. However, the fires kept reading up because everything has dried up, it was said. According to the fire service, the worst fire is raging near the village of Laerma on the holiday island of Rhodes. Tourists are currently not in danger.
heat wave continues
According to the meteorologists, the heat wave will continue next week with small fluctuations. A new peak with temperatures around 46 degrees will be reached in southern Greece on Wednesday. The thermometer will also indicate values around 40 degrees in the north. Even on most of the Aegean islands, temperatures are already above 38 degrees.
