According to the current test results, a wolf has hit a meadow in the Waldviertel – different sheep are dead. The mayor now calls for an “extensive wolf management” in the sense of all involved.
The result of the DNA analysis is there. As reported in the morning of 24 April, four dead sheep were discovered on a pasture in Droendorf-Altstadt near the Thumeritzbach in the Waldviertel, and bite wounds were found in ten other animals by the district chains of the Hornn district administration. The attack could not be prevented by an 110 centimeter high electric fence.
Before that, only a few wolf observations in the community
Because it was not clear for the time being whether a dog or a wolf was responsible for this, a DNA analysis was immediately initiated by the Research Institute for Wildlife Science. Until now there had been very little, isolated observations of wolves by farmers in the municipal area. So far, wild cameras with the prey have come to photos.
Authorities now work closely together
Now it is clear that a wolf must be drawn through the eastern source population. Mayor Robert Feldmann: “What is not unusual in the northern regions of the Waldviertel, unfortunately was also confirmed in our municipal area for the first time. A wolf tore the sheep.”
Since then, the horn of the district administration has been in close contact with the district showers, the district hunter, the Chamber of Agriculture, the responsible police station in Geras and the municipality. Further steps are discussed in close collaboration.
According to Feldmann, the focus is now on the information from the regional meadow holders together with the Farmers’ Chamber district.

This is the only way to minimize the risk of conflicts and a side of each other of people, wolves and animals in the wild and farm animals.
