Anger over heat tweet – Lauterbach sees “no future” for Italy

Date:

The German health minister experienced the Italian heat wave up close and last week expressed his concern that such hot holiday destinations in the future, if things continue like this, “have no future in the long term”. This has caused enormous irritation in Italy.

“Climate change is destroying Southern Europe. An era is coming to an end,” the minister wrote on Twitter upon his arrival in Bologna on July 13 (see tweet below). The pastor then visited some churches in Siena. “Beautiful medieval construction, but also a cold store. The churches should be open during the day as cold rooms and provide protection during heat waves,” said the Social Democrat, who was increasingly drawn south to Rome. Here, the minister posted a photo in front of the Trevi Fountain on Sunday. “But he made it to Rome anyway. 36 degrees, some wind. That’s fine. After the Caravaggios in the cool Galleria Borghese, now the Trevi Fountain,” said Lauterbach.

His extremely gloomy travelogue received little acclaim in Italy. Nevertheless, Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè was extremely diplomatic: “I would like to thank the German Health Minister for choosing Italy as a travel destination, which has always been the favorite holiday destination of his compatriots.” In Italy, people are aware of climate change, which affects not only southern Europe but the entire planet. “We are sure that Germans will continue to appreciate holidays in Italy,” assured Santanchè.

Senator calls for Lauterbach’s resignation
Senator from the ruling Forza Italia party, Maurizio Gasparri, who described Lauterbach on Twitter as a “provocateur”, took a much sharper tone. “He is talking nonsense and should resign. Goethe’s Germany did not deserve such a person in public roles,” said Gasparri.

An extreme heat wave is currently keeping parts of Italy in suspense. According to newspaper reports, 46.4 degrees was measured in Syracuse in southeastern Sicily on Saturday. For the new week, the meteorologists expect a heat wave with record temperatures of 47 to 48 degrees between Sardinia and Sicily. The weather service Ilmeteo.it spoke of a “Caronte bis” (Caronte with encore), referring to last week’s high “Caronte”. “Caronte” is the Italian name for Charon, the ferryman from the underworld of Greek and Roman mythology. Temperatures across the country are expected to drop slightly between Wednesday and Thursday.
