In Switzerland, one to five tornadoes with “greater damage” can occur every 10 years, according to the national natural disaster platform “Planat”. Tornadoes mainly occur in July and August.

Construction crane overturned
In La Chaux-de-Fonds (city of 39,000 inhabitants in French-speaking Switzerland), one person was killed on Monday when a construction crane overturned on a construction site in the station area due to the storm, the Neuchâtel cantonal police said in a statement. The crane hit a car, which then caught fire.

The authorities asked the population to avoid the affected area. Although the storm did not last long, according to eyewitnesses, the damage was extensive. Cars were damaged and some were completely destroyed, roofs ripped off. Furniture was blown through the air by the storm and dozens of trees were uprooted.

The storm passed over La Chaux-de-Fonds shortly before 11:30 am and lasted only a short time, writes the online portal “ArcInfo”. The sky suddenly darkened and the wind increased enormously. Bus and train services were disrupted by the storm. Trees and a power pylon fell on the track in several places.

Federal Councilor Alain Berset was shocked: “The photos of La Chaux-de-Fonds, which was devastated by the storm, leave us in awe. One person has died, several have been injured. My thoughts are with the people affected by the storms and the emergency services working for the population,” he wrote on Twitter.
