Households without electricity – storms once again raged across Styria

Date:

Tuesday morning brought heavy storms and rain in Styria, and there were several power outages. Just like the past few days, a broad storm front crossed the country. The fire service is still busy with the clean-up work.

The sky suddenly darkened over Graz on Tuesday morning. Heavy rain showers followed the rumble of thunder. “But the thunderstorms are now quickly moving east and it is slowly starting to dissipate in the Upper Mur Valley,” informs Christian Pehsl from GeoSphere Austria. By noon you can also expect relaxation in the Graz area. It would rain again next night, “but there is no great chance of thunderstorms”.

2500 households without electricity
According to Energie Steiermark, about 50 transformer stations failed on Tuesday morning due to the storm. There were disruptions, especially in South Styria and in the area around Eisenerz, about 2,500 Styrian households were without power in the morning. In some cases, however, these failures could be quickly rectified.

133 fire brigades in action
The torrential rain kept the firefighters on their toes. According to the state reporting center “Florian Steiermark”, 133 fire brigades have been alerted since 07:00, which are on duty with about 1,000 firefighters to resolve the currently almost 200 damage situations in Bad Radkersburg. Leibnitz, Feldbach, Deutschlandsberg, Graz, Weiz and Mürzzuschlag finish off.

Flood clean-up operations
Especially in St. Peter am Ottersbach the Florianis had their hands full – there was selective flooding. The bodies of water were simply too much for the streets and fields. In Wildon, the Wurzingbach overflowed its banks and flooded several residential buildings and the L 371, which had to be closed between Wildon and All Saints. Meanwhile, the fire brigade of Heiligenkreuz am Waasen is busy pumping out at least ten homes. In addition to the market city office, the district nursing home is also completely under water. Sandbags were also filled and constructed to protect other buildings from water ingress.

It cools down considerably
On Wednesday it will cool down considerably, especially in the north of Upper Styria. “It can even snow on the Dachstein, a few centimeters of snow is fine at minus 3 degrees,” says Pehsl. In the capital of Styria it will only be 20 degrees on Wednesday.
