Local election results confirm the vulnerability of Conservative votes in the south of England
The Conservative Party has lost hundreds of councilors in the south of England, it is the force with the most losses in local council elections in Wales and in Scotland the percentage of votes leaves it in third place, behind the Scottish National Party (SNP) and surpassed by Labor. But Boris Johnson is confident he can renew his 2019 win in two years.
According to the BBC’s forecast of local election results in all boroughs of Scotland and Wales, and England’s 146, Labor would have won 35% of the vote (0% variation from 2018), if the election were to take place in all the municipalities of the country have been. The Conservatives, 30% (-5%) and the Liberal Democrats, 19% (+3).
Sky Television calculated how many seats each party would have after a general election, which is governed by the majority system, and concluded that Johnson’s supporters would get 278, Sir Keir Starmer’s Labor 271, the pro-independence National Party Scottish (SNP), 50, and the Liberal Democrats, 28. These figures alarm the confused parliamentary group.
The House of Commons will reopen its doors on Tuesday, after the Queen’s Speech ceremony, in which the heir, Carlos, will read out the government’s legislative program for the new parliamentary year. Some of the dissidents in the group have already publicly blamed Johnson for the drop in votes, and the conversations among colleagues in this reunion will remove the risk of them losing their majority or their seats.
London police have postponed announcing new fines for participants in illegal gatherings and parties in Downing Street during the pandemic until after the election. A new episode of the “partygate” series is possible, but this time with a parallel plot. Police in Durham, north-east England, are investigating whether Starmer also violated the detention rules.
A student protesting the restrictions filmed Starmer having a beer with his colleagues at a party office in Hartlepool last April. The Labor Party says its team stopped there on campaign to eat a curry, which was no celebration. Police investigated the matter and did not contact Starmer. But now they have received “important information” about that meeting.
Johnson’s personal discredit is cited by his co-religionists as the cause of the results, which are not catastrophic for a government in the midst of its mandate. Analysts point to other structural factors: the Conservatives are losing in areas with university-going populations and in Thatcherite strongholds, such as Wandsworth or Westminster in London, famed for their low council taxes.
