German customs and police seized assets believed to be linked to Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov during a raid on a villa on Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria on Thursday morning.
Several high-quality luxury vehicles were removed from the lakeside villa in Rottach-Egern, reporters from the German news agency dpa reported. In addition to the villa in question, a special unit has been deployed to at least one other property in the Munich region.
In response to the war of aggression against Ukraine, the EU has imposed massive sanctions on Russian oligarchs and companies. Usmanov is listed in Annex I of EU Regulation 269/2014. Therefore, all funds and resources owned, held or controlled by this person are frozen and therefore may not be sold.
Suspicion of tax evasion
The Villa Usmanov, said to be a supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was the target of a raid in September last year. At the time, there were suspicions of tax evasion amounting to millions – and the multi-billionaire is also said to have paid a company from frozen funds.
