After storms – clean-up work in Carinthia: faecal water in cellars

Date:

The big cleaning has started. Although it has finally stopped raining, the follow-up work is still difficult. Because the completely overloaded sewage system in several basements of Klagenfurt supplies faecal water.

“The sewage network is not defective, but is about to collapse,” warns waste processor Sandra Wassermann urgently. The municipality of Klagenfurt has therefore also called for water conservation, for example not turning on the dishwasher or not doing the laundry. The most important thing, however, is that private individuals do not pump extra water into the canal!

Sewage pumps in use
The fire service is also struggling with this problem. Because the water is pumped into the canal and then comes up again from below, including faeces. “We now had to use the waste water pumps because toilet paper and the like clog the normal pumps,” the emergency services complained.

In Waidmannsdorf, there is fecal water in the basement: “It concerns a 30-party apartment building that we were only recently able to power again,” reports Martin Zmug, chief of operations of the professional fire brigade. However, the elevator still doesn’t work and people with walking difficulties also live there.

The fire brigade arrived in Viktring to free the Eurospar underground car park from the water. “The refrigeration technology for the entire store is located in the underground car park and is therefore now pumped out here,” explains Zmug. If the technology had been damaged by the flood, Eurospar would have had to close. In the devastated Kühnsdorf, the Floriani pump the water from Hannelore Kristof’s inn. Three pumps are running at full speed: “First was the hail, then the storm and now the water!” Mrs. Kristof says to the “Krone”.

Hotline for storm victims
“The highest values are still along the Glan. The decline is very slow. The same applies to sea water levels. Groundwater levels remain very high, especially in the Klagenfurt area,” the state crisis management team said. Landslides in particular make the situation tense. The state geologists are in constant use. A hotline has also been set up especially for storm victims: 05053622132.
