“Great worries” – new rain is just around the corner: worries in South Styria

Date:

The situation in the disaster areas in southern Styria has barely calmed down when new adversity threatens: heavy rain is forecast for the next few hours. There are fears of further landslides and flooded basements.

The emergency services and those affected don’t seem to be getting a breather: After two days without precipitation, rain is forecast again for Wednesday in the districts of Leibnitz, Southeast Styria and Deutschlandberg, which were hit by flooding over the weekend. Geosphere’s meteorologists expect up to 25 milliliters per square meter – “in some places it could also be more,” says Harald Eitner, head of Styrian civil defense.

Nursing home is evacuated again
This leads to two problems: on the one hand, the groundwater level threatens to rise sharply again and many cellars that have already been pumped dry will be flooded. In the morning, the approximately 30 residents of the nursing home “Haus der Senioren” in Kaindorf an der Sulm, just like a few days ago, moved to a house in Frauental. “There is no immediate danger, but there are already wet walls on the ground floor,” reports Klaus Steinwendter, Red Cross district rescue commander.

New landslides are imminent
The second looming problem is the landslides: already completely soaked and loose soil can come loose. In any case, new landslides are reported all the time, according to mayor Gerhard Meixner more than 150 in the municipality of Gnas alone. “Some residents come back from vacation and are only now discovering the damage.”

So Eitner and his team are very concerned. The level of the rivers and streams has now dropped considerably. According to Eitner, the expected precipitation on Wednesday should not cause any problems here either. It may rain again on Thursday, but stable weather is predicted for Friday.
