Ukraine has opened a border crossing with Russia. According to the Kiev government, Ukrainian refugees deported to Russia must return home via this “aid corridor”.
The border crossing between the Ukrainian region of Sumy and the Russian region of Belgorod has been open since Saturday, but has only now been officially announced. According to Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Wereshchuk, hundreds of people use this opportunity every day. There is also a hotline for refugees and transit options to the capital Kiev or to Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine.
Escape from hostilities and kidnappings
In the war between Ukraine and Russia, which has now raged for 17 months, Ukrainians have repeatedly had to flee to the neighboring country because of the frontline. In addition, the leadership in Kiev and Western observers repeatedly point out that Ukrainians are being kidnapped by Russian troops. The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin and his children’s rights commissioner Maria Alexeyevna Lvova-Belowa for the “unlawful deportation” of Ukrainian children to Russia.
To return from Russia to the Ukrainian-controlled part of their country, refugees previously had to accept detours through the EU countries or Georgia. Kiev has repeatedly asked Ukrainians living in the occupied parts of the country to flee to government-controlled areas amid continued attempts at reconquest.
