Drone search ended as New York beach reopened after shark attack

Date:

Rockaway Beach in New York reopened Wednesday after a shark attack. The authorities had, among other things, searched the water with drones, but did not see any sharks, the authorities said. It was probably the first shark attack on a city beach in the metropolis in decades.

A 65-year-old woman was bitten on the leg by a shark on Monday. The woman was reportedly taken to hospital in a critical but stable condition. Experts call it the city’s worst animal incident since the 1950s.

As a precaution, the affected beach was temporarily closed on Tuesday. Firefighters and police searched the sea for sharks from the air.

On Wednesday it was finally announced that no sharks had been sighted. For the rest of the day, the sea at Rockaway Beach in the Queens district must be searched by drones, boats and from shore. Authorities have released swimming again.

In recent years, more sharks have been sighted in the Atlantic Ocean around New York and the offshore island of Long Island, partly because the water quality has improved. Attacks were still rare.
