Explosions, flames – drone attacks: Moscow airport attack?

Date:

On Thursday night, the Ukrainian army apparently again carried out numerous drone strikes against Moscow and the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced the shooting down of two UAVs around 3 am. An explosion occurred near the capital’s second-busiest airport.

According to Reuters news agency, a car repair shop in Domodedovo, near the second largest airport, caught fire in the early hours of the morning. The Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation told state news agency RIA Novosti that the area affected by the fire was 1,000 square meters. The cause is unclear so far. There were mixed reports about the fire on Russian social media. There was even talk of Domodedovo Airport itself catching fire. In a video posted to Telegram, an eyewitness said she saw something explode before the flames spread.

Sobyanin had already reported on Wednesday evening that Moscow was the target of a “terrorist attempt” by the “Kiev regime”. At the end of July/beginning of August, the Russian capital with the skyscraper district of Moskva City was twice the target of an enemy drone attack within three days. According to Russian information, several drones were shot down. But the facade of a glass tower was also hit.

Russians destroy petrol depot in western Ukraine
The city of millions has been the target of drone attacks on several occasions, which, however, have nothing to do with Russia’s massive attacks in its war of aggression against Ukraine. A Russian drone strike in the Rivne region of western Ukraine destroyed a petrol depot on Thursday night, according to the local governor. No injuries were reported, writes Vitaly Kowal on Telegram.

But the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia is also increasingly being targeted by the Ukrainian air force. Attempts to attack were repulsed on Thursday night, the Russian armed forces said. Two Ukrainian drones were shot down near the city of Sevastopol, “nine others (…) crashed into the Black Sea,” it said.
