Not only Corona – Austria is now monitoring all respiratory diseases

Date:

A new online early warning system has been providing information on the development of serious respiratory diseases in Austria since Thursday. In addition to Covid, hospital treatment for flu, RSV and other infections is also taken into account.

The so-called SARI dashboard – SARI stands for “serious acute respiratory infections” – shows how many people have to go to hospital because of such an infectious disease. The data is updated every Tuesday. Health Minister Johannes Rauch speaks of an early warning system for the coming autumn.

“Last winter we already saw that not only corona waves, but also respiratory infections in general put a heavy burden on hospitals. For us, the new dashboard is like an early warning system,” Rauch said in a broadcast.

In addition to Covid, the dashboard also provides information about hospital treatments for flu, RSV and other infections. Together with the measured corona signals in the sewers, people are now well prepared for autumn, says Rauch, who calls for vaccinations against Covid, flu, pneumococci and (from autumn) RSV to be completed.

Fewer stationary shots
Of course, the first published data on the dashboard does not yet show any deviations. Accordingly, the number of weekly hospital admissions has been falling recently. In calendar week 19 – from 8 to 14 May – 1115 people were still in hospital due to respiratory diseases, 56 in intensive care.

Few Covid patients
In calendar week 29 – 17 to 23 July – only 647 people were still in the normal ward and 35 in intensive care due to severe acute respiratory infections. In the 19th calendar week, 14 percent of hospital stays were related to Covid-19.

In the 29th calendar week, the corona virus accounted for only five percent hospital stays. Most hospitalizations involved other respiratory diseases. Influenza and RSV hardly played a role in recent weeks.
