Republic Doesn’t Pay – “Bomweide”: Owner is left with damage

Date:

The public sector will not pay for the rehabilitation of the field in Vals in Tyrol that was destroyed by the aerial bomb on Saturday. The community now wants to look for more duds.

There has been unrest in the 500-strong community since the aerial bomb exploded on Saturday in 1945. There is great concern that another dud will explode in mid-air. “We are discussing whether and how we can scrutinize large parts of the municipal area,” says Vals mayor Klaus Ungerank in an interview with “Krone”.

‘Finding bombs is a matter of cost’
Several specialist companies have since contacted the village chief and offered them bomb search services. “That is of course also a question of costs,” emphasizes Ungerank, “I have heard from the ‘Krone’ that the landowner has to pay the search costs.” That is why he is in contact with the state of Tyrol about financial support.

What seems particularly interesting to him is the possibility of using historical data to map those areas where duds are suspected. The areas before and after the railway tunnel are perceived as problematic.

Also “No” from the country
Meanwhile, considerable costs are already incurred for the farmers whose fields the bomb ruptured the crater. Although he cannot do anything about the damage to the field, he must clean it up with money from his own pocket. The Republic does not care about the damage, according to Ungerankung, the country will not compensate for the recultivation either – the catastrophe pot does not apply in this case. The municipality itself would find it difficult to contribute anything.

Small consolation: the police collected the shrapnel on Wednesday.
