Every third water sample is contaminated with elevated bacterial counts, the environmentalists write in a report published Friday. The environmental organization Legambiente has criticized the water pollution on Italian beaches.
In a laboratory on the Legambiente ship Goletta Verde, the water samples were analyzed and of a total of 387 samples taken on the peninsula, 32 percent were above the legal limit.
Most pollution was found at the mouths of rivers, canals or at points where raw sewage is discharged. Elevated levels of bacteria were also found near bathing establishments and beaches.
40 percent of waste water is insufficiently cleaned
The environmental association reaffirms that investments for the efficiency of sewage treatment plants and the sewage network must be increased. “40 percent of the sewage in our cities is not adequately cleaned.
The EU has issued several warnings to Italy and launched four infringement procedures for non-compliance with the European Waste Water Directive. To date, the fines have cost our country more than 142 million euros, “said Legambiente in a letter.
