The wild carp caught in a flooded meadow in Eberndorf (Carinthia) can now enjoy life again in the Gösselsdorfer See. A dedicated team began the rescue operation Friday morning. The “Krone” was there.
“Who would have thought that we would ever live in a disaster area. And it’s not just the people who suffer, but also the animals,” says Eberndorf community leader and biologist Matthias Burtscher. His community was hit particularly hard by last week’s record rain. The flooding reportedly even washed wild carp out of the lake from Gösselsdorf and washed over the Seebach to a meadow a few kilometers away.
Finally, on Friday morning, supervising anglers Karl Sakl and Willi Urschitz from the Waller Jauntal fishing club set out to professionally recover the wild carp. Equipped with waders and nets, they removed the 25 kilo fish from the still flooded meadow and brought them back to Lake Gösselsdorf in a special water tank.
However, the flooded meadow will continue to be monitored, as even smaller fish may lurk in the opaque pool. “Then we take them out. Probably some smaller carp have already entered the stream,” explains Sakl. The fire brigade has also been able to save numerous fish from flooded areas in recent days.
