No full vaccine protection – 13-year-old boy with tetanus remains in coma

Date:

The 13-year-old, who reportedly contracted tetanus after an injury to his lower leg, is still in an induced coma at Kepler University Hospital (KUK) in Linz. His health is unchanged. The boy was not fully vaccinated.

The parents had expressly expressed the wish that the hospital would provide information about the importance of vaccination. Because adequate vaccination protection would have prevented the outbreak of tetanus. The teen had been in hospital with an attendant for wound care following a leisure injury. The person who accompanied him had falsely stated that the boy was fully vaccinated. A few days later – the incubation period is between four and fourteen days – tetanus broke out.

can of course be fatal
Tetanus is a disease with massive, involuntary and painful muscle spasms, which is why it is also called tetanus. The trigger is the toxin of a bacteria that enters the body through wounds, “even if they are only the smallest minor injuries”. It travels along the nerve pathways in the brain and spinal cord. Then it comes to muscle stiffness, especially in the area of the neck and chewing muscles, reports the Linz hospital. The course can be fatal.

Hospital: Check vaccination protection!
The university clinic calls on parents to check their children’s vaccinations and have them refreshed if necessary. The tetanus vaccination is included in the free vaccination program and is vaccinated as part of the sextuple vaccination in the third, fifth and eleventh to twelfth month of life. At school age (seventh to ninth year of life), the combined diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough) and polio (polio paralysis) vaccination is repeated. After that, a refresher course is required every ten years until the age of 60.
