Shock in Romania – Russian mine explodes in tourist resort

An explosion took place on the Romanian coast near Costinesti on Monday. The trigger may have been a Russian naval mine.

A spokesman for the Romanian Navy said this to the Digi24 TV station. According to civil protection, no one was injured.

Navy divers are now heading to the site of the blast as another mine floats in the sea nearby, said Colonel Corneliu Pavel, spokesman for the Romanian Navy. Since the outbreak of the Russian offensive war against Ukraine, the Romanian navy has defused a total of five Russian naval mines in the Black Sea.

Explosion near hotel
Costinesti is a very popular tourist destination. According to the authorities, the explosion took place in the water on a dike near a hotel. A loud bang was heard and then black smoke rose, reported an eyewitness who saw the incident from his hotel terrace.
