The EU is sending an Election Observation Mission to Liberia for the parliamentary elections in October. The SPÖ-EU delegation leader will be headed by Andreas Schieder.
The Liberian authorities had asked Brussels to send them. “The EU is a trusted partner in Liberia and will support the democratic government in holding free, secret and universal elections,” Schieder said in a broadcast on Monday.
“To this end, our Election Observation Mission will conduct an independent and fact-based assessment of the election process.” The upcoming elections are another crucial moment for the democratic consolidation of the country.
The first experts are expected on August 27
The EU Election Observation Mission consists of several groups. The core team consists of ten election experts who will arrive in the Liberian capital Monrovia on August 27, 2023. On September 5, 20 long-term observers will join the mission and be deployed across the country to monitor the election campaign.
Thereafter, 40 short-term observers will complement the election day mission, which is also deployed across the country. The EU Election Observation Mission will remain in the country until the election process is completed.
