In Hawaii, the death toll from the devastating forest and wildfires has risen to 101, as Governor Josh Green announced Wednesday night.
Search teams continue to find bodies in burnt-out counties on the island of Maui, nearly a week after the devastating Hawaiian wildfires broke out.
The number of victims could even double
With so many missing, the number of victims could potentially double, Green said. Initial expert estimates suggest that the economic damage from the devastating fires could be between $3 and $7.5 billion.
The small town of Lahaina, which had a population of 13,000 prior to the accident, was particularly hard hit. Many streets there look like in a war zone. The city center was completely destroyed. More than 2000 buildings burned down completely or partially.
The wildfires broke out in multiple locations on Maui and the neighboring island of Hawaii, which shares the same name as the state, last Tuesday. Strong winds fed the flames, causing them to spread quickly. Authorities say the particularly disastrous fire in Lahaina was 85 percent contained on Monday.
