About 40 refugees were rescued from a boat in distress off the coast of Cape Verde on Tuesday. However, according to the Senegalese foreign ministry, aid came too late for several other people and they could only be rescued dead.
There were several reports of the number of deaths on the boat. The Coast Guard estimated the total number of fugitives — survivors and dead — at 48. The local morgue said seven bodies had been brought in.
Originally possibly 100 refugees on board
According to Cape Verdean media, the boat with about 100 people on board left Senegal a month ago. Many more people are feared to have died. According to the information, the migrants came from Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone.
“We must take in the living and bury the dead with dignity,” said Cape Verdean Health Minister Filomena Goncalves.
The Cape Verde archipelago is located about 600 kilometers off the coast of West Africa on the migration route to the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain.
