‘Rare fire’ wind turbine catches fire off the British coast

The Scroby Sands offshore wind farm off the east coast of England had to be evacuated on Tuesday. One of the turbines caught fire for unknown reasons.

The German operating company RWE says in a statement that none of its employees were at risk. The fire extinguished itself after about five hours. An RWE spokesperson stressed that it was an “extremely rare fire”. The Coast Guard and rescue workers were alerted. But no intervention on your part was necessary.

Wind farm supplies 48,000 households with electricity
Now technicians are investigating how the fire could have started. Scroby Sands, one of the UK’s oldest wind farms, consists of 30 turbines with a combined capacity of 60 megawatts or enough electricity to power more than 48,000 homes. RWE was optimistic that operations could resume on Wednesday.
