At around 8:10 a.m. on Tuesday morning in Homburg, Saarland, Germany, a car carrying a five-year-old caught fire. The seriously injured child had to be freed from the vehicle by rescuers. Police believe the boy started the fire. There is no evidence of third party guilt.
The boy who sat in the white Kia at the foot of the Schlossberg in the center of Homburg was in the car during the fire. When the interior of the vehicle suddenly exploded, witnesses immediately called emergency services and rushed to the aid of the child. The child suffered severe but not life-threatening burns.
Cause of fire still unknown
The fire brigade extinguished the flames and it soon became clear that the fire did not come from the engine compartment and had not broken out while driving. The car belonged to the boy’s parents, according to police.
A spokesperson said: “As for the exact cause of the fire, the investigation is ongoing, there is no evidence of a breach of duty of care by the legal guardian at the current status of the investigation.”
