Moderna is updating its Covid vaccine to be effective against “Eris”. This vaccine should be available in time for the vaccination season.
The American pharmaceutical company Moderna announced on Thursday that its renewed corona vaccine is against the subvariant ‘Eris’, according to an initial study. This should hit the market in the fall if approved by the regulatory authorities.
Study on mice effective
Not only Moderna, but also vaccine manufacturers Novavax and Pfizer are developing vaccines against the Eris subvariant together with Biontech. In a study with mice, Pfizer’s vaccine was found to be effective.
Eris is the nickname for EG.5 and resembles the XBB.1.5 variant, a sub-variant of the still-dominant Omicron variant. The World Health Organization (WHO) has upgraded the novel coronavirus EG.5 (Eris) mutation and placed it under increased surveillance.
