In Tyrol and Salzburg – storm: hikers caught, car hit by mudslide

Date:

Severe storms again led to numerous operations in parts of Tyrol and Salzburg on Thursday evening. In the Ausserfern in Tyrol, for example, several hikers got stuck due to a mudslide, and there were also a number of debris avalanches in the Pitztal. The fire brigade was also challenged in the Zillertal. In Salzburg, on the other hand, a car was hit by a mudslide and a family had to be evacuated from their home.

Eight hikers were literally trapped in Holzgau in Tyrol’s Lechtal early Thursday evening after a mudslide went off the hiking trail from the Roßgumpenalm near the Ramstalbach. Seven Germans and a Czech were hit. After they no longer dared to descend into the valley, they made a distress call.

Hikers climbed over Mure with emergency services
The alerted mountain rescue and fire brigade responded with 17 members and were eventually able to rescue the hiking group over the Mure and then take them to the valley floor in vehicles. Fortunately no one was injured.

Country road Pitztal closed due to mudslide
In the upper Pitztal, in the municipality of St. Leonhard, a violent thunderstorm with heavy rain and short hail caused mudslides in the villages of Plangeross and Tieflehn around 6 p.m. on Thursday evening. In the area of the Reiselebach gully, the rubble and mud went to the Pitztal state road. It had to be closed until 8:30 p.m. during the cleanup.

There were also storms in the Tyrolean Zillertal. Including in Mayrhofen. The fire brigade had to pump out several cellars and underground parking garages where the water had entered.

Heavy storms also in Salzburg
Storms with heavy rainfall have also led to several mudslides in the Salzburger Oberpinzgau. A car was hit by a debris stream on B161 Pass-Thurn-Straße on Thursday evening and pushed against a crash barrier. According to the police, the 44-year-old driver and his passenger (39) were able to free themselves.

In Mittersill, the Rettenbach overflowed its banks. A family with two small children had to be evacuated from their home.

Several homes suffered storm damage
As the Pinzgauer civil protection officer Manfred Höger announced Friday morning, five houses with 25 to 30 inhabitants are likely to be affected by damage to the Rettenbach. The residents must initially remain in their homes until the creek can be brought back into the bed with heavy equipment.

A roof fire broke out in one of the buildings around 2:45 a.m., but it was quickly extinguished. The district was also cut off from the drinking water supply due to the storm. After a briefing in the morning, an inspection and aerial survey took place on the Rettenbach in order to better assess the situation in daylight.
