The EU countries even blocked their airspace for Russians when the offensive war against Ukraine began. But now several Russian planes have flown over Finland and Estonia.
The reason for this violation of the rules was a violent thunderstorm over the Gulf of Finland. In such cases, it is up to the individual countries to exceptionally allow overflights with Russian aircraft.
Three flights affected
In a statement in Moscow, the Russian aviation authority Rosawiazija thanked the EU for its help. According to the information, there were three flights from the Russian companies Rossiya, Ural Airlines and Nordwind to or from Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea on Wednesday.
On the way to the Kaliningrad exclave, Russian pilots have to make a detour via the Baltic Sea because of the blockade of EU airspace. Above the Gulf of Finland there is only a narrow corridor of international airspace between Finland in the north and Estonia in the south.
Thunderstorms forced alternative routes
The Finnish traffic authority Fintraffic has confirmed the special permits. The thunderstorms forced the planes to deviate from the planned routes, says spokeswoman Leena Huhtamaa, according to Yle radio.
Estonia also allowed the evasion maneuver, the state broadcaster reported, but without giving further details.
