Holidaymakers on the northern Spanish coast should be particularly careful at the moment. The reason is poisonous jellyfish. Touch causes very severe pain, in the worst case, skin contact with it can even be fatal.
In the fight against the feared Portuguese galleys, the Spanish authorities are currently fishing dozens of such cnidarians from the sea, as a video from CameraOne shows.
Mediterranean coast, France and Italy also affected
The jellyfish has powerful tentacles that can grow up to 50 meters long. Their venom kills fish and other prey. But in the worst case it can also cost people their lives. Allergy sufferers and weakened people are particularly at risk.
Portuguese galleys are currently also found on the Mediterranean coast, in France and in Italy. Increases in temperature and algal growth are believed to favor their spread.
