Emergency services at the main fire station in Villach were life-saving on Saturday morning when they freed a man buried or trapped under planks and heavy boxes in the basement.
“Last minute rescue” was the name of fire chief Helmuth Hausmann, who called the operation, which took place at 8:20 a.m. in an apartment building in Villach. A man may have been searching for something in his basement when suddenly a shelf toppled over, burying him under heavy boxes and electronics. It wasn’t until his partner was looking for him that the man could be found in the basement.

Then it had to happen quickly: “The man could not free himself and threatened to suffocate under the heavy load in the chest area!”, Hausmann reports. In total, 13 men from the main fire station in Villach helped in the liberation by using muscle power to clear the heavy objects. “When the last heavy objects were removed, he gasped,” Hausmann said. The man received first aid from the Red Cross and was then transferred to the LKH Villach.
