It is almost daily occurrence that an American teacher in America is fired or even arrested for illegal sex. But the case of New Jersey’s Victoria Cristello has left many shaking their heads.
Crisitello was fired from her private Catholic school, not because of a romance with a student, but because she had “premarital sex” with her partner. The young art teacher had done so well in four years at St. Theresa School in Kenilworth that she was called up for a promotion interview to become headmistress. There, Chief Nurse Theresa Lee noticed that the unmarried Crisitello had a small tummy.
In court for discrimination
Instead of the promotion, she explained to the teacher that premarital sex was a gross violation of the school’s moral values and Catholic rules. Cristello went to court for discrimination.
But the chief justice has now ruled that “church exemptions” override anti-discrimination laws, which protect women from dismissal due to pregnancy or marital status. The cancellation is legally valid.
